A refused visa feels final. It usually is not, but what you do in the first week decides which options remain open.
1. Read the grounds, not the outcome
Every refusal has to be reasoned, and the standard Schengen form sets out the grounds as a checklist with boxes ticked. The usual ones:
- the purpose of the trip was not sufficiently established
- the intention to return was not demonstrated
- travel insurance missing or inadequate
- insufficient means
- an earlier breach of visa conditions.
Which box is ticked determines everything that follows.
2. Appeal, or apply again?
Appealing
The appeal goes to the Immigration Appeals Board inside the eight-week deadline, and it needs to contain:
- an argument against each ground actually given
- new documents that undercut the basis for the refusal
- references to the Board’s own practice where it helps.
Reapplying
You can file again at any time, and it is treated as a new case, but the earlier refusal sits on the file. Submitting the same application again produces the same answer.
3. Fix what was thin
Most refusals come down to weak evidence. The improvements that matter:
- stronger ties to the home country, property, settled work, family remaining there
- a detailed itinerary and confirmed accommodation
- proper travel insurance
- solid financial evidence: three to six months of statements, not one.
4. Get it looked at while the clock is running
Appeals turn on precise legal argument aimed at the grounds given. In our appeal work, well-prepared cases are reversed regularly, particularly where EU elements or unusual circumstances are in play.
5. Consider whether a visa is the right instrument
If visitor visas keep being refused, the answer may lie elsewhere:
- an EU right of residence, where there are EU elements
- family reunification for a spouse or established partner
- a study or work permit, where the applicant has the qualifications.
Three things not to do
- ignore the refusal and attempt to travel anyway
- reapply immediately with the same documents
- let the eight weeks run out while deciding.
Send us the refusal as soon as you have it, the options narrow with every week that passes.
